Abstract: The proposal to develop a large low grade copper deposit on the island of Viti Levu, the Namosi Prospect, may have strong negative impacts on the marine environment along parts of the southern coast. The proposal includes submarine tailings dispersal (STD) which would involve the dumping of all the mine spoil after extraction of the copper into the sea below the surface mixed layer. The volumes would be large, in the region of 100,000 tonnes/day and such an operation has never been successfully operated in a area where there are healthy coral reefs. This paper draws attention to the doubts about this disposal option and whether it is environmentally plausible
