| | The potential of a beche-de-mer fishery. Author(s): Harriott, V.J. Year: 1985 Notes: Australian Fisheries, 18-21, June Held at: IMR - Beche-de-mer BF Identifiers: Beche-de-mer Abstract: Covers survey methods of holothurians used on the Great Barrier Reef, and results. Weight loss caused by processing is estimated. From the estimates of abundance and mean weight of the final product, a gross estimate of product yield for the sites surveyed is made. Given the density of the sea cucumber populations surveyed, possible fluctuations in price and demand for the product, and competition in the marketplace from Third World countries with low costs, the author considers a beche-de-mer fishery unlikely to be viable on the Great Barrier Reef.
