Abstract: Fish trapping using the FAO designed z - trap was tried in Vanuatu waters around Efate Island by the Fisheries Department. The average catch (3.15 kg)was less than expected, especially after comparison with other data available from the Carribeans or New Caledonia. Despite the important variability in the data, some results came out regarding the distribution of commercial fish species at different depth (Lutjanus rufolinatus being very abundant between 100-200m, and Pristipomoides flavipinnis being the most abundant between 200-250m)and the distribution of Nautilus pompilius.
