Abstract: Multispecific ”mass spawning” of scleractinian corals has been shown to involve 22 species on Fijian reefs. Spawning in spring in Fiji coincided with rising neap tides. The tidal variations were small, 1.8m on Suva Reef, and tidal effects may have been overridden by weather patterns and strong water currents. As a cue to gamete release therefore, tides may not be as important as in regions where tidal regimes are much greater. Spawning on Fijian reefs followed the full moon in both October and November. Acropora millepora divided its release of gametes between the two months. Spawning of corals in Fiji coincided with the rise of the palolo worm (Eunice viridis, known in Fiji as balolo).
