ASFA Subject(s): Shells, Marine molluscs, Check lists
Identifiers: Cowries
Abstract: A list is given of 83 confirmed species and 3 doubtful species of cowrie (Cypraeidae) from the Solomon Islands and the neighbouring island of Bougainville in Papua New Guinea. Fossil cowries are not included. Each listing consists of citations with occasional notes on distribution or name variations. DNA studies may clarify some taxonomic disputes. New species may be found from deep-sea sampling or during cataloguing of the shell collection of the Solomon Islands National Museum. Previous studies from 1938 onwards are reviewed briefly. A list of references and an index to species are included.

ASFA Subject(s): Shells, Marine molluscs, Check lists
Identifiers: Cowries
Abstract: The cowries of Fiji are typically Indo-West Pacific with no endemic species. Of around 100 species listed, 75 are confirmed from Fiji and 18 others are unconfirmed, possibly mistakenly identified from Fiji. The exact count is debatable given taxonomic disputes. Many of the fossil cowries are yet to be identified to species level. Numerous semi-fossilised specimens were found in soft muds dredged from Suva Harbour and Laucala Bay. No deep-water sampling for cowries using the correct gear has occurred so new species may yet exist. Each listing consists of citations with occasional notes on name variations or distribution. Previous studies from 1939 onwards are briefly outlined and collections examined in Fiji and the USA are identified. A list of bibliographic references and an index to species and subspecies are included.

LC Subject(s): Conidae--Solomon Islands

Abstract: A list is given of 140 confirmed species of cone shells in the Solomon Islands and another 13 unconfirmed species in alphabetical order. Bougainville records are also considered as some previous studies have included these as Solomon Islands shells. Annotations consist of citations with occasional notes on distribution or name variations. One new record, for Conus caracteristicus, is added. Dredging and deep-sea sampling are considered likely to reveal additional species. Previous studies from 1823 onwards are briefly discussed, with conflicts over taxonomy and recorded distribution highlighted. A list of references and an index to species and subspecies are included.
