Abstract: Between 28 December 1988 and 8 February 1989, 29 transshipments of tuna from Japanese gillnetters fishing in the Tasman Sea took place in Noumea. 14 of the transshipments were sampled by SPC staff for size composition and other data relating to the catch and fishing operation collected. This brief report details the results of the sampling activities.

Abstract: A proposal by SPC Secretariat for a South Pacific albacore tagging project designed to provide essential information on the population dynamics of albacore (Thunnus alalunga)and the interaction among the three main gear types used in the South Pacific - troll gillnet and longline. During 1988/89, the gillnet increased greatly, with possible severe effects in store for both the albacore population and the troll and longline fisheries. This proposed tagging will provide a timely assessment of these effects.
