Abstract: An account is given of the findings of the research cruise conducted on board the Koyo-Maru in the Kadavu Passage in December 1996. The specific scientific objectives of the cruise were: 1) sampling for zooplankton, phyllosoma larvae, fish larvae and juvenile fish in 2 regions off Kadavu and Beqa Islands; 2) echosounding in the vicinity of 2 seamounts off Kadavu; and, 3) CTD measurements off Kadavu and at the eastern entrance to the Beqa Passage. In addition, it was also planned that the cruise would provide the opportunity to train USP staff in the use of equipment and the methods involved in conducting research on board and operating a large vessel. The cruise provided an opportunity for the crew and cadets of the Koyo-Maru to participate in applied research in fields closely related to their practical training.

Abstract: Findings of a research cruise conducted on board the Koyo-Maru in the Kadavu Passage, Fiji, in December 1997 are presented. The scientific objectives of the cruise were: 1) sampling for zooplankton, phyllosoma larvae, fish larvae and juvenile fish between Suva and Solo Lighthouse; 2) grab sampling for sediments; 3) grab sampling for benthic fauna; 4) CTD measurements; and 5) demersal fishing over a seamount off Kadavu. The training objectives of the cruise were: 1) to train technicians and students in the methods of biological and oceanographical research; and 2) to develop multidisciplinary research projects amongst USP academic staff. In addition, the cruise provided an opportunity for the crew and cadets of the Koyo-Maru to train USP staff in the equipment and methods involved in conducting research on board, and operating, a large vessel.
